Born in Bufffalo; son of Sidney and Elizabeth (Wells) Shepard. C. Sidney Shepard graduated from Yale in 1878 and received a law degree from Hamilton college in 1879. He succeeded his father as head of Sidney Shepard & Co. (later Republic Metalware Co.), and he was also a major stockholder in the Western Union Telegraph Co.
